WHO WAS HELEN AUSTIN?

HELEN AUSTIN B.Sc. R.D.

In 1970, Helen Austin represented the Canadian Dietetic Association (CDA), now Dietitians of Canada (DC) at the first ever Technical Group Meeting for Dietitians in the Caribbean. It was at this meeting that the resolution to form an association for nutritionists and dietitians was passed. Helen worked untiringly with the Steering Committee appointed to form this association and assisted both with its formation and development.

Helen demonstrated in many ways her love of Caribbean people. She and her husband, Roy, spent several years in Grenada where she graciously extended her hospitality to members of the Steering Committee for many planning meetings. In addition, Helen attended Steering Committee Meetings in Trinidad and Annual Conferences in several countries at her own expense. She always generously shared her experience and expertise in procedures for conducting meetings as well as in all matters related to the formation and development of our Association. For this, Helen was honoured by CANDi at its Tenth Annual Conference.

In April 2000, CANDi learned with great sadness of Helen’s passing. CANDi expresses gratitude for her dedication, commitment, wise guidance and unselfish service. Her invaluable professional contributions to the formation of CANDi are gratefully remembered. The financial legacy she so generously bequeathed to Dietitians of Canada has allowed the Caribbean –Canada Network to participate in this very important venture to enhance professional growth and development among network members of both regions. Helen Austin will be remembered as a valuable colleague and friend.
